Norwood rocked by double murder
WESTERN BUREAU:
Two unidentified men were shot and killed by unknown assailants in an abandoned building in Norwood, St James, on Tuesday, shattering a yearlong period of calm.
The killings brought to an end a year without any murders in the once-volatile community, bringing to six the numbers of people killed in St James since the start of 2026. This is one fewer than recorded over the comparative period last year.
“Mi just a hope seh dis a nuh de start of de foolishness wah use to gwaan because last year show seh wi can live inna peace in Norwood,” said Nadine Smith, a resident of the community. “Wi wah fi live inna peace. Wi want wi children fi grow up inna wah safe community, so we can’t allow di foolishness fi start back.”
According to reports, at about 8:45 a.m., residents heard heavy gunfire coming from the abandoned building. When the shooting subsided, the two unidentified men were seen on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds.
The police were alerted and arrived to find the bodies – one clad in a red hooded jacket, grey jeans shorts, blue stripe boxers, and a pair of army-coloured crocs, and the other in a red and black hooded jacket, black and white boxers, black pants, and green slippers. The men are believed to be in their 20s.
“It was a whole heap a shot dem get ... so it was hard to identify them by their faces,” another resident told The Gleaner. “I strongly believe that they are complete strangers to the community.”
