Force will not solve Haiti's problem

THE EDITOR, Madam:

Haitian intelligentsia and the rebels are in sync with what they want for Haiti and of what, and who they believe are the root causes of Haiti’s struggle. As Caribbean people, it’s in our interest to see a stable Haiti. Are the armies going in to a war zone? What’s their mandate? Will the patriots have a seat on the presidential council to put in place a suitable plan for elections?

Will a democratically elected Haitian government have the backing to be free to formulate its own constitution?

Nothing short of a democratically elected government will be able to repair the mistrust Haitians now have for the international community, including the Caribbean Community.

The armies will fail if they believe that going into Haiti with force will solve the problem. If Jimmy 'Barbeque' Chérizier is killed, 10 more will rise up in his place.

It’s a most complicated situation, but the people who care most about Haiti are singing the same tune, and the rest of us should listen.
