Better infrastructure needed to host big events
THE EDITOR, Madam:
As we strive to build a better Jamaica, let us not forget the importance of responsible event planning and infrastructure development.
When two entertainment industry titans perform, the turnout is inevitably massive, and traffic congestion follows. Our national anthem reminds us to “teach us true respect for all, stir response to duty call.” Let us heed this call. For too long, Jamaicans have endured traffic congestion along the north coast corridor due to improperly planned events.
It’s time for a permanent solution, including improved infrastructure like turn and merge lanes and possibly flyovers. We cannot rely solely on police efforts to ensure smooth traffic flow nor allow promoters to host events without collaborating with government entities to find permanent solutions. The Government must prioritise the safety and timely exit of event patrons.
If this cannot be guaranteed, venues should be deemed unsuitable and permits withheld. Regarding toll highways, the recent accident on the north-south leg highlights the need for technological solutions, such as additional pass-through lanes and reduced stop-and-pay lanes.
Further, traffic congestion during holidays, weekends, and major events is unnecessary.
