The making of an uncivil war

THE EDITOR, Madam:

The American Civil War did not end and it has had a resurgence in the 21st century. We here in Jamaica must learn from that history and ensure that we do not have a repeat of the war which nearly destroyed Jamaica.

With more guns available and higher levels of criminality (which will be strengthened by the arrival of those deportees who were engaged in criminal activities in America), we are in for a serious time .

The daily political invective, misinformation and uncivil behaviour have caused me to support fixed election dates and proportional representation. It seems that the election in Jamaica will leave the country more divided, with many embittered and cynical people having little possibility of running, according to Buju Banton.

With migration as one of the themes of the resurgence of white supremacy in the UK and the USA, more of us will have to stay at home. The appeal for a reformation of the values and attitudes to make Jamaica a ‘place to live , work, raise families’ and retire is more urgent than ever. As Bob Marley sang, “we don’t want no more trouble”.
