Commonwealth – what ‘wealth’?

THE EDITOR, Madam:

Commonwealth Secretary General Patricia Scotland has written that we need a Commonwealth fit for the future. She obviously doesn’t live full-time in the UK. If the head of the monarchy doesn’t care or protect his own son (Harry) from abuse (and probably encouraged this!) because said son married a woman with black blood, how can he care about so-called Third World countries where his forefathers raped and pillaged so that his family can be surrounded with wealth.

Commonwealth countries are now smart/intelligent enough to innovate their young people to forge ahead in the world and look after our own countries. India did this.

I have lived in Britain for nearly 70 years and I know black people will never be treated equally so when Ms Scotland says that the Commonwealth is a beacon of unity – it is not! Britain rolled out the red carpet for Ukrainians and gave them money and houses, and bombs, etc, to fight their Russian neighbour. But there are thousands of people in Africa dying of starvation/war and there is no mention of this or any help given. Instead, Britain reduced/withdrew humanitarian aid to Africa and, God forbid, any who escaped these awful situations and try to enter Britain, they are treated like criminals.

Britain is a very hard country to live in. If you are black, they smile to your face but as soon as they turn away, the smile fades quickly and the hate radiates from their eyes. To survive these 70 years, I have learned to ‘play the game’ while staying alert at all times. The saying ‘keep your friends close but your enemies closer’ comes to mind.

Remember, we were slaves and we fought hard to get this little freedom. Let’s not give it up lightly. Commonwealth – what ‘wealth’?
