Error in the year

THE EDITOR, Madam:

I am writing with reference to your article captioned ‘Former UN Judge says call for reform of chief justice’s role principled, not related to appeal court ruling’, published January 10.

There is an error in the sentence, “I was not aware of the [2025] Court of Appeal judgment that overruled a murder conviction in which the trial judge was Chief Justice Sykes”. The original text had “2019”, instead of “2025”. It was a 2025 Court of Appeal judgment that overturned a 2019 judgment of the chief justice.

I am well aware of this judgment, since it is the background for my observations on the proper placement of the chief justice in our legal system. I apologise for this factual error, which has no impact on my position that, on appointment, the chief justice should sit in the Court of Appeal as its president.
