Portmore teacher charged after allegedly pulling gun on girlfriend
Police have charged a 44-year-old teacher after an alleged assault on his girlfriend at his home in Portmore, St Catherine. Investigators allege that they subsequently seized a gun and ammunition at the property.
He is Joel Ellis of 7 East, Greater Portmore, the police say.
He has been charged with possession of a prohibited weapon, dealing in a prohibited weapon, unauthorised possession of ammunition, and assault at common law.
According to reports from the Greater Portmore police, the incident occurred about 6:50 a.m. on Wednesday, when Ellis allegedly brandished a firearm during an argument with a woman, pointed it at her, and "tapped her in the face".
A report was subsequently made to the police, who later that day conducted an operation at Ellis’s residence.
During a search of the premises, investigators allegedly found a Smith & Wesson .38 revolver loaded with two .38 cartridges concealed in a black bag beneath a bed.
The police said a further search of the bedroom reportedly uncovered an imitation Glock firearm loaded with five imitation 9mm cartridges inside a carton box.
The firearms and ammunition were seized, and Ellis was taken into custody.
Police said he was formally charged following a question-and-answer session conducted in the presence of his attorney.
