A Blue Revolution

The Editor, Sir:

Now that the prime minister has apologised to the nation, we are waiting to see what is next. The signing of the extradition order, though at the heart of the matter, seems contrived and the lawyers representing Coke should have a field day.

Mr Golding acknowledged that he had set the bar very high and that he has fallen short. It is now up to him to demonstrate to the nation that he can live up to his promises. He should realise that the people are not in any mood to wait too much longer for the changes and, therefore, he has to burn the midnight oil and have the Parliament sitting for extended periods, so that we get the legislative changes necessary. What will be of more critical importance is the implementation of the changes and the staffing necessary to carry them out.

Clean up inner city

Transparency and accountability must now take centre stage. In essence, we need a much more participatory democracy. We need to find the resources to clean up the inner-city communities, tear down the zinc fences and clean up the debris; construct new roads and create a relaxed ambience. We should use money from the Tourism Enhancement Fund to beautify the place to attract tourists in places like Trench Town. There can be no excuses not to get this done. These people have suffered under the control of terrorists, aided and abetted by the politicians for far too long. This bondage must be broken and the criminals thrown behind bars.

It's a new day in Jamaica. We have seen the Orange Revolution in the Ukraine, the Red Shirt Revolt now taking place in Thailand and a quiet revolution in British politics. I think that we need to usher in a Blue Revolution. This was the colour Mr Golding chose for the National Democratic Movement when he promised Jamaica that he would be "new and different". We have been waiting for this difference for close to three years since he became prime minister. It's time to deliver.

I am, etc.,
