NOTE-WORTHY: Bruce, not Dorothy
The position taken in the Gleaner's editorial of May 21 that Dorothy Lightbourne should resign is reaffirming the opinion that there is a group of persons in the Jamaican society that are underestimating the intelligence of the Jamaican people.
The person who needs to resign is Bruce Golding. He made the key decisions. He had the political affiliation with the don, Dudus. He misled Parliament. It would appear that the editorial writer wants to scapegoat Ms Lightbourne.
The Jamaican people are more intelligent than that. It is clear that there are interest groups trying to gerrymander the situation. It will not work.

Nonsense editorial
Replace Dorothy Lightbourne with whom? You? Every country goes through change in dealing with instant gratification and globalisation issues. Let those elected to do their jobs do so and cut the political underhandedness applicable to pen and paper-pushers as yourselves.
Put you in the seat and you will make matters worse as you just now demonstrate in your Friday morning edition.

People power
I am proud of the power of the people as demonstrated in Tivoli Gardens, by standing up for what benefits them. On the other hand, I am dismayed by the seeming impotence of our so called law and order leaders, in permitting the blocking of the area. The commissioner of police has failed his first serious test, because he had to be aware of this impending and illegal separation of this community, with no preemptive action on his part.
In most civilised, law-abiding countries this action by Tivolites would have been nipped in the bud. The deleterious effects on our country's reputation and economy will be with us for decades to come. I am also very impressed by the power of the 'dons', iand I would further suggest if Christopher Coke were prime minister, there would be no blockades anywhere in Jamaica.

Be more responsible
With reference to news carried both in the local papers and on the airwaves regarding a claim by the police that a stockpile of a large cache of weapons and especially that of the feared 50 calibre Grizzle Boar Rifle is suspected to be in Tivoli Gardens, shouldn't such intelligence be confined within the armed forces and not released to the general public.
In addition, even if it should be revealed to the public, the journalists and editors of the media should be more responsible to ensure that what they report is indeed fact. Too often, the media, in a hurry to make news, spread rumour which only tends to create panic in the nation and malicious alignment against others.
The editors should take a mature and responsible approach to careless news and carry out the action of editing, encouraging journalists and broadcasters to garner facts rather than racing to make propaganda. For goodness sake, let us build our nation, not destroy it.
