Control the madness

Published:Wednesday | May 26, 2010 | 12:00 AM

The Editor, Sir:

Absolute madness. Even though I am in agreement with the security forces maintaining law and order in our society, I am very disappointed in the strategy implemented to resolve this crisis. As if we are watching a John Wayne movie, it is very appalling and heart-rending to see our security forces openly trading bullets with their own brothers and sisters. This has resulted in the loss of lives on both sides.

other measures

In my opinion, instead of witnessing a repeat of the Morant Bay Rebellion, there are other measures that could be used to resolve this crisis: Impose public deadlines regarding the relocation of law-abiding citizens of Tivoli Gardens; impose sanctions such as termination of electricity and water; impose a curfew between the hours of 8 p.m. and 8 a.m. Monday to Sunday; and have discussions with the United States government explaining the ramifications of our local security forces being engaged in apprehending Mr Coke.

Unless the Government decides to introduce and adopt these changes, not only will we see an escalation in violence, but it will leave us with the impression that the long-awaited day of redemption has come so that the security forces can exercise their might over a certain section of the population.

I am, etc.,
