Not business as usual

THE EDITOR, Sir:

AS A concerned Jamaican, I believe there is a light at the end of the tunnel for our dear country in this 'Dudus' saga. I also believe that it is an opportune time for the prime minister to redeem himself in this sordid affair.

This is my suggestion to the prime minister: Immediately on completion of the initial assault by the security forces on Tivoli Gardens and the surrounding areas, using the ambit of the state of emergency now in place, a sub-7stantial number of soldiers should remain in Tivoli Gardens. Security personnel should also establish strategic positions on top of residential buildings on a 24-hour basis.

recovering illegal weapons

This action should be maintained for at least a month or more, if necessary. During this period, consultations should be held with all stakeholders, foreign partners and the diaspora, in seeking the necessary resources in aiding in bulldozing all derelict buildings and bushes surrounding Tivoli and its environs.

All efforts should be made to recover all the illegal weapons. A concerted effort should also be made to mount roadblocks on all major thoroughfares leading from the Corporate Area, in order to prevent the gunmen from fleeing with their weapons to other parishes. A strong security presence would also have to be maintained in the surrounding communities to prevent minimal infiltration of criminals from the initial target area.

When this area is completed, the security should repeat the process in adjoining trouble spots. This would be a good start in dis-mantling all garrisons and letting the criminal elements realise that it is not business as usual and that the law-abiding citizens, as well as the politicians, are fed up with their behaviour.

I am, etc.,
