Seaga's hubris

Published:Friday | May 28, 2010 | 12:00 AM

The Editor, Sir:

The article headlined 'Let my people go' is a mirror of the hubris of Edward Seaga. It is astounding that this man, who was partly responsible for the monster that is now Tivoli Gardens, has the temerity to imply that the security forces are holding the residents of his garrison hostage.

Where was the voice of Mr Seaga when the barriers were being erected by the Dudus supporters. Where was his voice asking the gunmen to lay down their weapons? Where was his voice praising the restraint of the brave members of our security forces? What sympathy did he show for the brave soldier and police officers who gave up their lives in the service of their country?

The seeds of mayhem and garrison loyalty to politicians were sown by politicians of his ilk. The fact that he may have provided good schools, clinics and sporting facilities for Tivoli should not free his conscience and his legacy for the tragedy that is Tivoli Gardens and garrison politics in Jamaica.

I am, etc.,
