Rev Miller aiding thugs, gangsters

Published:Thursday | June 3, 2010 | 12:00 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

REVEREND AL Miller's action is exactly what's wrong with Jamaica's approach to crime fighting. This cavaliering action by one man is undermining the security forces' apparatus, undermining public confidence in the judicial system and lending credibility to armed thugs.

The reverend should be mindful of the tried and true maxim: 'The road to hell is paved with good intentions'. I beg of the good Rev to extract himself from crime-fighting issues and allow the state to exercise its duty.

Tivoli Gardens is part of Jamaica! It should remain as such.

Sending an 'ambassador' to deal with state issues between a small rogue community and the legitimate security forces is sending a structurally flawed message. These residents will either be emboldened to defy the country's security request or believe that they are a separate entity and, thus, a victim and at 'war' with the rest of Jamaica.

Jamaican laws absolute

All Jamaicans and every inch of Jamaica should be and must be subject to Jamaican laws. If certain laws are deemed malicious, there is an appropriate method of changing them. Arming oneself, barricading an entire community, and daring the state security forces to enter is definitely not acceptable.

Rev Miller ability to meet with Jamaica's most wanted, as noble as he might have it in his naïve head, is undermining the state position in a number of ways.

How was he able to meet Dudus while the police had a nationwide search out for him (Dudus)? Bruce Golding and his lackey Attorney General Miss Lighbourne admitted they had no address for Dudus and had no idea where he could be found.

In most countries that are serious about law and order, this Rev would be summoned before the courts, put under oath and questioned about Dudus.

Rev Miller, your willingness to relay Dudus' views, perception and feelings gives the impression you are either truly naïve of who Dudus is, the organisation he controls and his method of operation, or you are simply an advocate of this character.

Democracy must prevail

You used your good office to tell us that Dudus feels he is misunderstood, that he feels Jamaica does not appreciate his crime-fighting initiatives and his benevolence to the elderly. This is a laugh. In communities controlled by the Italian Mafia, there was no crime either. I guess they were all good people, helping the communities and, therefore, misunderstood. Take a look at the communities controlled by the Russian mob in the USA - same thing: no visible crime.

I refuse to accept gangsters administering justice. Their organisation is not subject to my vote. I could not change them if I wanted. The state judicial system, though not perfect, is the best democratic form of justice man has invented.

I am, etc.,

C. Hamil
