THE EDITOR, Sir:

"Politics is not a road that angels tread," says Paul Souingne, a Canadian member of parliament. At present, Prime Minister Bruce Golding is hanging on to the rear end of a hog. Many Jamaicans have written him off. History may prove these individuals wrong.

Many politicians worldwide have erred, but whenever given the opportunity, they have redeemed themselves. One only has to look at our recent history. In 1979-1980 Prime Minister Michael Manley experienced some of his darkest hours and was booted out of power. Yet, less than 10 years later, he returned to power. Former Prime Minister P.J. Patterson's famous quote, "I shall return," was fulfilled, with him becoming the longest-serving prime minister in the history of Jamaica.

Yes, Prime Minister Golding got caught between a rock and a hard place - a situation that no one envies - and is having problems extricating himself. Instead of throwing him an anchor so that he sinks, this nation should throw him a life jacket and ultimately give him a chance to redeem himself.

External forces

It is strongly rumoured that powerful external forces are at work like the master puppeteer. They are manipulative opportunists to the extent of possibly over-throwing the Government to achieve their end. These puppets should be careful: 'same knife stick sheep, stick goat'.

Instead of perpetual condemn-ation, this nation should give Golding the chance to redeem himself. I hope, like the mythical phoenix, he will rise from the ashes and soar to the highest height.

I am, etc.,
