Police post to be set up in Maroon Town

Member of Parliament for South St James, Derrick Kellier, has endorsed the call by residents for a police post to be established in the Maroon Town area, citing that there is available accommodation to house the facility.

"This is something that we will have to look into, and the minister of national security and the Police High Command will have to look into these matters and see what the merits are in establishing a post here," said Kellier, who is also the minister with responsibility for labour and social security.

"The area has grown, and there is need for additional assets to be brought to bear on the area. There is a building there that is owned by the Rural Agricultural Development Authority. It can be adjusted to accommodate a police post."

Kellier toured the Maroon Town community on Friday in the aftermath of the murder of 36-year-old electrician Easton 'Bryan' Chambers and his pregnant 19-year-old common-law wife, Shantel Davis, which took place last Wednesday night.

The minister was accompanied on the tour by Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of Area One, Devon Watkiss; Divisional Commander for St James, Superintendent Egbert Parkins; and other police personnel.

Relentless in request

He indicated that he would continue to advocate for a permanent police presence in the area, whether or not the recommended building was accepted.

"The police also indicated that they would increase police presence in the area and bring additional assets to bear on the community as they move to clean up the area and ensure the safety of residents."

It is understood that the Maroon Town area has experienced an increase in gun-related crimes such as armed robberies and shooting in recent times.

Kellier said he also called on the residents to give the police their full support as they try to bring the perpetrators of the gruesome double murder to justice.

"Those persons who are involved in the lotto scam had better decide to re-skill themselves and cease this illicit activity. Get engaged in legal activities to earn as the police is on a zero-tolerance approach to this. They will be caught, arrested, and pay the price."
