WESTERN BUREAU:A Kingston man who pleaded guilty to using expletives to a policewoman during a confrontation along Gloucester Avenue in Montego Bay on November 3 was fined $6,000 in court on Monday in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court.

André Bailey, who is of an unspecified address in Kingston, pleaded guilty to indecent language, abusive language, and resisting arrest. He pleaded not guilty to an additional charge of threatening the constable, but he was subsequently found guilty of that charge as well.

Reports are that at approximately 8:30 p.m. on the day of the incident, the policewoman saw Bailey at Gloucester Avenue, also known as the Montego Bay Hip Strip, acting suspiciously. She began to question him about his conduct.

Bailey reportedly became aggressive and began cursing the officer. When she held on to him, he reportedly threatened to kill her. In his defence, Bailey denied making any threats to the officer.

DENIED MAKING THREATS

"The part about killing the officer is definitely a lie," Bailey told Resident Magistrate Sheron Barnes. "It was five of them and when she held on to me, she said I looked like a man of interest.

"At the CIB (Criminal Investigation Branch), them say them a go find something to charge me with, and a pure lick she (investigating officer) a lick me inna me side while they had me in the car (police car)," added Bailey.

"So what were you doing out at Gloucester Avenue?" the RM asked Bailey.

"Me have a cousin who work at AquaSol," replied Bailey. "I did not disrespect the officer ... . I did not curse indecent language to any of them."

"Mr Bailey, you pleaded guilty to the charges, and you pleaded guilty because you know you did it," Barnes said.

Bailey was sentenced to a total sum of $6,000, or 10 days in jail, for the indecent language, resisting arrest, and threatening a constable. The abusive language charge was withdrawn.

"When you go out on Gloucester Avenue, please treat the ladies, as well as the men, with respect," Barnes told Bailey before handing down the sentence.
