Western Bureau:With limited job opportunities outside of the sugar industry, 18-year-old Donald Collins Jr of Darliston, Westmoreland, has decided to create his own employment. He has established a computer-repair business to meet the technological needs of residents of his community.

Dubbed the 'Computer Whiz' by residents in Darliston, Collins revealed that his interest in technology started at the age of nine when he discovered the joy of trying to assemble, repair, and modify computers.

"When I attended Godfrey Stewart High School, it gave me an opportunity to hone my computer skills," said Collins. "Throughout my years at high school, I managed to maintain first place in information technology in my class."

Collins' computer skill sets include assembling, networking, virus removal, software and hardware troubleshooting, installing operation systems, wireless network set-up, remote assistance, and laptop repairs, among others skills he learnt from instructors in high school and other experienced computer technicians.

"For me, it was not just okay for me to stop at the high-school level. I wanted to get additional certification, so I went to HEART College of Innovation and Technology at Freeport Montego Bay, where I got my Cisco certification in computer repairs," noted Collins. "So what I am offering in my community is professional service … . Persons don't have to travel far to get the kind of service I am offering."

Since the establishment of his computer-repair business, Collins has been getting a great deal of positive feedback, especially since the services are affordably priced, and the level of customer service offered is of a high standard.

ROLE MODEL FOR YOUTH

Through the use of social media and his website www.donaldcomputerwhiz.us, Collins is able to advertise special offers, which has made the young entrepreneur a stand-out member of the community among his peers, who see him as a role model in terms of seeking to start a business of their own.

Having followed his dream, which has led to him now enjoying the fruits of his labour, the young businessman is encouraging other young persons with a vision to go out and pursue their own dreams.

"Do not give up. Keep on trying and remain focused on your goals," encouraged Collins. "Don't let financial problems or your age hinder you from trying … . God helps those who help themselves."
