WESTERN BUREAU:

Two St James men who allegedly stole a car were offered bail in the combined sum of $600,000 when they appeared before the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court on Monday.

Twenty-eight-year-old Adrian Woodstock, of a Tangle River address, and 23-year-old Garnet Hines, a truck driver of a Flamstead Gardens address, are charged with larceny of a motor vehicle. Their case will be mentioned before the court on October 17.

The court was told that on September 10, the complainant parked his white Toyota Corolla motor car at the Cornwall Regional Hospital in Montego Bay, and on his return 45 minutes later he found that it was missing. A report was then made to the Mount Salem Police Station.

The following day, acting on information received, the police, went to Tucker, Irwin, in St James, and saw Woodstock and Hines in the process of scrapping the stolen vehicle. The men ran from the police but were subsequently held and taken into custody.

In court on Monday, attorneys-at-law Martyn Thomas and Adrian Dayes, who represented Woodstock and Hines, respectively, made successful bail applications for their clients before presiding magistrate Carolyn Tie.

"Most of what has been outlined (in the allegations) is not true, based on my instructions. Mr Woodstock denies the allegations," said Thomas.

"Mr Hines is prepared to report as often as required to the Spring Mount Police Station," said Dayes.

Clerk of the Court Natalie Malcolm said that the prosecution was not opposed to bail for the men.

"I will ask for conditions to be imposed on them. The file is 95 per cent complete, but I need a further statement," said Malcolm.

Tie offered bail to Woodstock and Hines in the sum of $300,000 each and ordered them to report to the Spring Mount Police Station every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.

"They are to stay away from the civilian witnesses, and a stop order is to be placed for them (at all ports)," said Tie as she set the case for mention on October 17.
