WESTERN BUREAU:
A St James man who admitted to stealing seven tins of corned beef from a supermarket in Montego Bay was remanded in police custody when he appeared before the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.
Dwayne Perry, who is of a Bogue address in Montego Bay, pleaded guilty to simple larceny, of corned beef from the Bay City Supermarket on August 5. He was remanded in custody for sentencing on October 2 when his police records will be brought before the court to help determine his sentence.
Perry had previously pleaded guilty when he appeared in court on August 21, but at that time, his plea was not accepted due to his mental condition. He was pleaded on Tuesday after a report from the St Catherine Adult Correctional Facility declared him fit to plea.
"Why did you do that, sir?" Resident Magistrate Carolyn Tie asked Perry, concerning the robbery.
"I don't know. I was hungry. I'm asking you please to see me through on this," said Perry as he asked the court for mercy.
"Is this the first time the police ever charged you with anything?" asked Tie.
"No, I got charged for smoking ganja," said Perry.
"You ever get charged for anything else?" the magistrate asked next.
"Not that I can recall," Perry admitted.
"Well, since you cannot recall, we are going to have to ask for your records," said Tie as she set the case for sentencing and instructed that Perry's records be brought on October 2.
