WESTERN BUREAU:

A total of 617 persons graduated from the Montego Bay Community College (MBCC) during the institution's 2013 graduation ceremony which was held at the Montego Bay Convention Centre on Sunday.

Of these, 213 graduated from the Faculty of Business with Associate of Science degrees and 75 with bachelor of science degrees in business studies, respectively.

A total of 89 graduated from the Faculty of Computer and Technical Studies with associate and bachelor degrees in agricultural technology, management information systems, architecture and construction technology.

Sixty-seven persons graduated from the faculty of hospitality, tourism and creative studies while a total of 173 students graduated the institution with Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Exami-nations (CAPE) associate degrees from the Faculty of Arts, Natural and Social Sciences.

In her address, principal of the MBCC, Dr Angela Samuels Harris, said she was particularly proud of the young men who comprised the first cohort to graduate with associate degrees in auto repairs and engineering technology.

"Montego Bay Community College prides itself on providing relevant education and training which meets industry demands," Harris said. "We are the first tertiary institution in the Caribbean to offer a programme in automotive repairs at this level and we are particularly proud because these young men will leave us and take their places in the workforce as the best qualified automotive technicians in the region."

Other inductees

The college also inducted former director of sales and marketing at the Half Moon hotel, Myrtle Dwyer, and Justice of the Peace Barbara Nelson, as honorary fellows. Nelson was lauded as one of the institution's founders as well as the longest-serving member of its board of management.

"We are indebted to you for the insightful work and depth of knowledge shared in providing architectural and engineering services, which have resulted in the myriad infrastructure developments at this noble institution," the citation to Nelson read.

"You have served the institution with distinction, dedication and devotion, and you are loved and respected by the entire Montego Bay Community College family. It is in this respect that the Barbara Nelson scholarship was instituted to honour you as someone who displays selfless passion for education and young people," it added.

Dwyer, who taught Hotel Front Office Operations and sat on the advisory board of the institution's Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism, was praised for her extraordinary contribution to the MBCC, and for being a scholar and "hotelier par excellence", as well as an astute, loyal and humble individual with a fervent belief in honesty, professionalism and excellence.

"Mrs Dwyer, your contribution to the MBCC has been extraordinary. We benefited from the introduction of an internship programme for hospitality and tourism students from tertiary institutions at Half Moon. You have personified the qualities of excellence, dedication and service above self that are characteristic of a remarkable human being," Dwyer's citation read.
