Every year that is added to a person's life is a reason to celebrate and 100 years more so as this is a feat that is not accomplished by many.  Born in Ipswich, St Elizabeth, on March 12, 1914, Charles Warren celebrated his 100th birthday on Wednesday.

When Rural Express visited Warren at his daughter's home on his birthday, he was being fed cake and non-alcoholic wine by a church member as a group from the Seventh-day Adventist church in Santa Cruz, of which he is a member, had come to share with him on his special day.

Warren is now unable to move about and must be fed as hands which once made a living as a tailor and played the guitar and violin are now too weak and shaky.

His main caregiver, his daughter, Merletta Graham, says that although he cannot move about, he is still very vocal, which was very evident when Rural Express visited and Warren was engaging the church members in conversation.

Graham added that while there were days when his memory had gaps, there were times when he could remember persons.

When asked what he was thankful for, Warren said he was grateful he had lived a long life and that he was still able to communicate with others. He was also happy that members of his church were present for his birthday.

One day at a time

"I am thankful to know that I live to see 100 years and somebody come and look for me from the church and that when you ask me a question, I can hear and answer you.

"Don't I can talk? Don't I talk sensible?" Warren asked proudly

Warren, in chatting with his church brothers and sisters, said it was all about taking it one day at a time.
