For many, home is where the heart is, and nothing can be truer for young entrepreneur Tasheika Jadusingh, who decided to act on a dream, ditching her day job at a clothing store to become a stay-at-home baker.

Creating heart-warming indulgences straight out of the oven and hot off the fire, she personalised her pastry company with a 'yardie' flair, making her sweet treats from all things coconut.

Cocosingh's Delight, a dream which became a reality last November, started out as a nightmare at first, since Jadusingh would only bake out of requirement. "I began living with my guardian when I was six years old, and she taught everything that she knows, including cooking. I dreaded the idea at first, baking out of necessity, but I am truly happy that I pursued it because it proved to be very beneficial and I now love it," she pointed out to Food.

Meaning of Cocosingh

The name Cocosingh derived from her love for coconut, along with the latter part of her last name, Jadusingh. "I grew up on coconuts, my mother used it for anything, and when I found out about its advantages pertaining to health, I tapped into the natural resources of it, like, for example, I make my own coconut oil."

The 'do it yourself' coconut oil manifested itself into other coconut products. She explained, "One day I bought some coconut and made several products. I sold them to my boyfriend's friends and they loved it. Through word of mouth, the good news spread, and pretty soon I was going all out, showcasing my product anywhere, from stores to expos. I even went to the Coconut board for assistance. Some went well, others were not so great."

sweet treats

Her wide array of sweet treats include: coconut drops, gizzadas, peanut cakes, gourmet cookies and grater cake in the flavours red and white (strawberry and almond), green (peppermint), yellow (pineapple and ginger) and reggae (recipe of red gold and green). She now has a fleet of flavoured cupcakes: rum and raisin, banana bread, fruit cupcake, coconut rum, and additionally has come up with original and innovative combinations trail mixes (dried fruit, nuts and shredded coconuts) and coco mixes, (raisins, peanut cake and coconut drops). She has even branched off into wedding cakes and birthday cakes.

Cocosingh's Delight product line can be found in selective stores across Kingston and they currently do deliveries. Referring to her significant other as her tower of strength, since he helps her every step of the way, she encourages those wanting to follow their own dreams to just do it, and find a way to be unique in entrepreneurship.
