Portland:

Retired ward nurse Ruebel Grezilda Bryan was flocked by dozens of family members, colleagues, and well-wishers, who turned out to celebrate her 100th birthday last Sunday.

The centenarian, who sported a broad smile throughout the specially arranged party, also exchanged hugs and hand-shakes as she savoured the moment with loved ones at a function held at the Per View Lounge in Port Antonio, Portland.

"One hundred years is a long time," commented Carol Bernard, a granddaughter.

She added: "I am happy to be witnessing this momentous occasion, which has brought together dozens of family members in one place at the same time. Those living in Jamaica, the United States, and Great Britain have journeyed to Portland to not only meet and greet, but also to especially celebrate Grandma's 100th birthday. It is a special occasion, which is also shared by her two sons, Lascells Daley and Neville Bryan, who are in their golden age years."

According to Bernard, her grandmother is still able to walk around the house and read the Bible every morning, while offering good and sound advice to persons who visit her on a daily basis.

Bryan, who was born in the Breast Work community in 1914, also worked in the hotel sector. She later took up a full-time career as a ward nurse before retiring in about 1971. She then went on to spend time conducting religious duties with the Friends Church.

The many greetings brought by friends and other community residents all bore similarities: she is a caring and loving person who adopted many underprivileged children.

The passing of her husband more than 35 years ago was a sad moment for Byran, but with the love and care showed by other family members, she was able to cope with his passing.

The centenarian, who no longer attends church, is supported by 47 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, and 14 great-great-grandchildren.

She now resides in the John Town community in Port Antonio.
