Investigators assigned to the Firearms and Narcotics Investigation Division (FNID) of the police force seized more than 1900 pounds of ganja during an operation in Dumfries, St Thomas on Sunday.

The Jamaica Constabulary Force's Corporate Communications Unit says about 11 p.m., FNID personnel carried out an operation at a beach in Dumfries where two men were seen with some knitted bags.

The men were accosted and the police say a search of the bags revealed the compressed ganja. A boat affixed with two 75HP engines were also seized.

The police estimate that the illicit drug has a street value of $5.7 million.

The two men were taken into custody, however, the police say their identities are being withheld pending further investigations.

Acting Director of FNID, Superintendent of Police Oral Henry emphasised the implications of the seizure.

“The proceeds from these drugs are often used to purchase illegal firearms, which are then trafficked into Jamaica. By disrupting this operation, we have not only prevented a significant amount of drugs from reaching their destination but have also cut off a key financial pipeline for criminal gangs. Our sustained efforts, with the help of our pour partners are crucial in intercepting criminal activities,” said Henry.

The public is reminded to report illegal firearms and narcotics by contacting FNID at 876-923-6184, the National Intelligence Bureau at 811, Crime Stop at 311 or the nearest police station.
