Students under pressure

The Editor, Sir:

I am a final year student at the University of the West Indies. For the duration of my three-year sojourn at this institution, the worst challenges I have experienced have been in my last two semesters. I am constantly confronted with academic and economic challenges. I've seen some of my peers in tears because they do not have the wherewithal to purchase course materials to attend classes in order to achieve their academic goals.

I was able to make it to the end of the semester, but the aforementioned colleagues in their first and second semesters, have expressed concern about whether they are able to register for the next academic year.

My heart becomes heavy for those students who are seeking tertiary education, because the subsidies normally in place to assist current and new students are no longer available. The new International Monetary Fund agreement has negated most of the assistance for students. My peers and I feel that the JLP has kicked us out of school. This has subsequently led us to go on Facebook to form support groups.

It was inevitable for a cut in education to take place, but the minister of education should not have made empty promises. Politicians should keep their word. Students need to know where they stand. Many Jamaican families simply cannot afford tertiary education and their offspring continue to face difficulties in accessing student loans.

This academic year has been harsh, the challenges are overwhelming. I am honestly concerned for my fellow students into the 2011/2012 academic year, it hurts.

I can only offer some support through these few words - please remember not to waste your time. Be focused and stick to your goals. Look towards a future where you are the owners of your destiny. Look for alternatives. Change your agency, embrace your courses and seek to actually learn a lesson and move beyond the idea of just passing.

Hold the faith, keep strong and God bless!

I am etc.,
