Ms Hinchcliffe's appointment and lessons for Mr Holness

Published:Friday | October 7, 2011 | 12:00 AM

Now that Ms Audrey Hinchcliffe's appointment has excited Jamaican attention, we will in time learn how Hillary Clinton's International Council on Women's Business Leadership (ICWBL) actually impacts America's global trade diplomacy as associated policies, especially with regard to countries such as our own.

But beyond the honour to Ms Hinchcliffe, personally, her recruitment to the ICWBL should hold lessons for our prime minister-designate, Mr Andrew Holness. The simplest of these is that all knowledge does not reside in the Government, and that partnership is important to achieving development - whether nationally or globally.

The most pressing problem confronting the Government that Mr Holness will soon lead is the creation of jobs for Jamaica's multitude of unemployed people. Jobs follow economic growth.

Nobody knows what is required to get these things done more than successful entrepreneurs like Audrey Hinchcliffe, which Mrs Clinton clearly appreciates.

Mr Holness should take heed and take wise counsel - wherever it exists.
