Concerns hit fisheries sector

Published:Wednesday | August 4, 2010 | 11:53 AM

There are concerns this afternoon about an increasingly popular method of fishing called trawling or crawling in Jamaica.

One writer to the gleaner’s multi-media portal gireports.com says the practice is worse than dynamiting and results in the deaths of thousands of marine organisms including fish and shrimp in order for fishermen to get a small catch.

In an interview with The Gleaner On-line, the agriculture and fisheries minister Dr Christopher Tufton said he is aware of the problem but he could not say the extent to which trawling is being practiced.

However, Dr Tufton says the Government will be moving to address improper fishing methods through impending legislation.
